A Little History on Texas Holdem

There really isn't any factual truth on where Texas Holdem got started but rumor has it that the first game was in the early 1900's in Robstown, Texas. In 1925 it was then taken to Dallas, Texas where it began to earn its popularity. It was later taken by a group of gamblers (in them Doyle Brunson among others) to Las Vegas but didn't have its first official game till 1967 in the Golden Nugget Casino in downtown Las Vegas.

For many years, the Golden Nugget was the only casino to offer this game and since it was offered in such a lousy inside area in the casino that no real big money players would join in on the game, the game moved from the old sawdust casino to the Dunes Casino on the Las Vegas Strip in 1969. This was a very positive move for the professional player since not many people were familiar with the game and other people's naivete helped them win.

The Gambling Fraternity Convention that hadn't really had much success the year before decided to hold the second annual convention with Texas Holdem as one of their participating games in order to attract more visitors. The game had success and in 1970, Benny and Jack Binion acquired the rights to the convention and renamed it the World Series of Poker and passed it to the Binions Horseshoe Casino where a journalist suggested that no-limit Texas Holdem be the main event and it has been ever since.
